In 2015, more than half of Americans surveyed by Project: Time Off did not use all the vacation days they earned, resulting in 658 million unused vacation

days in the United States. Even worse, 222 million of these days (averaging 2 days per worker) couldn’t be cashed out or rolled over—resulting in $65.6 billion in time-off benefits being tossed away.

So what’s making this depressing trend take hold? For many over-worked Americans, the idea of taking a vacation is a luxury that comes with significant risks. According to data released by CityPASS, many cited that they didn’t want to be seen as replaceable; that they were afraid no one else would be able to adequately do their job; and that taking time off was harder as you moved up in the company.

Despite employees’ fears, the facts tell a very different story: According to many recent studies, taking a break from the rat race has serious benefits for your physical health, your mental well-being, and your overall productivity.

-Taking time off helps you physically. There are numerous health benefits to taking your vacation. According to the results of several extensive studies, men who took annual vacations were 32% less likely to die from heart disease. Women who did not regularly vacation with almost 8 times more likely to have a heart attack or develop coronary artery disease.

-It helps your mental state, too. Maintaining a consist vacation

schedule also helps reduce symptoms of depression, lessens stress and boosts creativity.

-Using your vacation time is good for your professional success. According to a study commissioned by the U.S. Travel Association, most managers noted that employees who took vacation were happier and more productive.
